As you may be aware, we have been eagerly awaiting the Office of the State Fire Marshal’s decision on the CUPA’s questions regarding Fire Code interpretation on construction standards for fuel-containing above ground storage tanks. Anyone that uses our fuel delivery service is impacted by this decision.

To take a look at the full decision, just follow this link. In the meantime, here’s a brief summary of how this decision affects folks like you:

1) According to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, farm tanks must meet NFPA 30 standards, which allow single-walled tanks.

2) In addition, tanks that house under 1,100 gallons are required to meet 5706.2.4, which also allows single-walled design.

3) Above ground tanks at farms DO NOT need to meet UL 2085.

The summary released by the Office of the State Fire Marshal is a step in the right direction. Now that a statewide determination on AST’s is in place, we can work together toward finding a sensible method of Fire Code compliance for all above ground storage tanks.
